Arts & Economic Prosperity study to be unveiled next week

NORWICH – The nonprofit arts and culture industry generates $1.8 million in annual economic activity in Chenango County – supporting 41 full-time equivalent jobs and generating $176,000 in local and state government revenues, according to the Arts & Economic Prosperity IV national economic impact study. The most comprehensive economic impact study of the nonprofit arts and culture industry ever conducted in the United States, Arts & Economic Prosperity IV was conducted by Americans for the Arts, the nation’s leading nonprofit organization for advancing the arts and arts education.

The results of this nationwide study will be unveiled locally at 5:30 p.m. next Wednesday, Sept. 5 at the Canasawacta Country Club in Norwich. The joint presentation is made possible through a partnership between the Chenango Arts Council, Commerce Chenango, the City of Norwich, and Chenango County Government. Randy Cohen, vice president of Research and Policy, Americans for the Arts, will present the roll out of this special report.

According to the study, nonprofit arts and culture organizations in Chenango County spent $1 million during fiscal year 2010. This spending is far-reaching: organizations pay employees, purchase supplies, contract for services and acquire assets within their community. Those dollars, in turn, generated $933,000 in household income for local residents and $176,000 in local and state government revenues.
