Letter to the Editor: This is the 21st century, not the Dark Ages

Editor,
People never cease to amaze me. When will we realize we are all created different by design. If we weren’t we’d be a world of clones.
I said that to say this:
My daughter was married to a man from Morocco. They have a 7 year old daughter. Saturday, Aug. 18th was the end of Ramadan, a month long fast broken at sundown each day. On the last day, there is a celebration very similar to our Christmas, my daughter was taking my granddaughter to see her father on Friday, Aug. 17th. Out of respect to him and his beliefs, she chose to “cover,” a custom among the women, where the head is completely covered and no hair is showing. My granddaughter as well was “covered.”
The looks they got from store clerks and gas attendants were incredible. They ranged from not touching her hand to backing away as if they had three heads and a tail! Unbelieveable! In this day and age to “shun” others because they are different? Fear of the unknown is no excuse. This is the 21st century, not the dark ages. Parents, teach your children well. Tell them there are differences and respect and understand them. Use your computer for something other than Facebook and games, You’d be amazed all you can learn.
We are supposed to be the “Melting Pot” a blend of all different beliefs, customs and nationalities. It is this blend that has made us great.
As a country singer Ronnie Dunn said: “We All Bleed Red.” Even the so called ‘Blue Bloods.’ So, please, remember the next time you see someone who is ‘different’- be it belief or the way they dress - we may be different, but we all bleed red.
