Letter to the Editor: McBride the only officially qualified candidate
Editor,
I am writing in support of Joe McBride for County Court Judge. I am a lifelong resident of Chenango County and have known Joe for many years. I have found it difficult to remain silent while observing the repeated attempts at character assassination of Joe.
This election has brought out much interest and emotion from the community. This is a great opportunity for all registered voters to make their voice heard. No matter what your personal opinion regarding different events of the campaign process, there is one thing we should all agree on. That is we need the best candidate for the position. That candidate is Joe McBride. How have I arrived at this conclusion? Quite simply, Joe McBride is the only candidate rated qualified by the Independent Judicial Election Qualification Commission.
For those not familiar with the Independent Judicial Election Commission, I would encourage you to go to www.nycourts.gov/publications/pdfs/IJEQC-brochure.pdf or call (518)285-8571 and educate yourself. Don’t just take my word for it, get the facts.
What I have learned is the Independent Judicial Election Qualification Commission (IJEQC) was established in 2007 to rate candidates in order to help voters make more informed choices about the individuals running for judge in New York State’s trial courts. Candidates’ participation in the Commission’s evaluation process is 100% voluntary.
By deciding to seek a rating from the IJEQC, Mr. McBride has subjected himself to intense scrutiny from a non-biased, independent panel. Mr. McBride was required to disclose an enormous amount of personal and professional information, provide references, and submit to a face to face interview. Some of the information required by the panel is disclosure of any criminal convictions, personal litigation history including any findings of malpractice and defaults of any orders and orders of protection, unsatisfied judgments, tax warrants, tax liens, or mechanics liens entered against them and bankruptcy petitions filed by them.
Now, one must ask the question “Why would the other candidates choose not to subject themselves to such rigorous, intense scrutiny?” That is a question only they can provide to answers to. It seems to me since New York State has a process in place to help educate voters, every candidate would want to be rated.
By deciding to seek qualification by the IJEQC, Mr. McBride has shown his continued commitment to the people of Chenango County by giving them confidence in his judicial qualifications. I hope on Thursday, September 13th you will put all the personal opinions, rumors and allegations, and family obligations aside and do what is right for Chenango County, elect the only candidate who has proven himself to an independent commission to be qualified as our next County Court Judge.
