Cincinnatus 4, Sherburne-Earlville 0
HAMILTON – Sherburne-Earlville suffered its first loss of the season losing to Cincinnatus in the finals of the Hamilton Optimist Tournament Saturday.
The schedule was moved up from an evening start to 10 a.m. in order to avoid the forecasted thundershowers. As a result, three S-E players, including leading scorer Carter Cole, were unable to attend. S-E head coach Mike Rodriguez said the three players were taking the ACT college entrance exams. “Even with all of our players, straight up, I still think Cincinnatus would have had the slight advantage,” Rodriguez said. “Cincinnatus has a very good team.”
Caleb Eaton scored a pair of goals for the Red Lions, who took a 2-0 lead into halftime. The Marauders struggled in the midfield and some nagging injuries. “It was a tough test, and we were juggling things around,” Rodriguez said. “We’re looking to get healthy quick.”
The Marauders’ Jake Irwin and Elijah Morris were named to the all-tournament team, while goalie Sam Caton was named the defensive MVP.

GIRLS’ SWIMMING
Chenango Valley 113, Norwich 66
NORWICH – An Echentile Natatorium Friday, Norwich debuted against a high-powered Chenango Valley lineup that captured all 12 events.
Norwich, while out of the winners’ circle, had several quality swims, said head coach Kevin Diefenbacher. “As I go down through the meet, we had a lot of seconds and thirds, and in the 50 free, we went two-three-four,” the NHS coach said. “Chenango Valley’s front line was really strong and held their team together.”
Compared to the start of last year, Diefenbacher said he saw time drops from kids who swam last year. In the grand scheme of the season, that is what is most important. “Winning a meet is nice, but what we’re concerned with the most is time,” he said. “We are putting in a lot of yardage, and we still had times faster than last year.”
Norwich is at Greene Friday.
