Bainbridge Rotary hosts charity bike ride

BAINBRIDGE – The Bainbridge Rotary Club will host its fifth annual River Ride this Saturday. Bicyclists from far and wide are invited to take part in the series of bike rides ranging from 10 to 100-mile courses through the Susquehanna and Unadilla River valleys. There will be a $15 to $20 entry fee and riders will be provided with water and food.
“We plan to take care of the bikers by following them in cars loaded up with spare bike parts, bike tires, as well as food and bike bottles full of water,” said organizer Dale Fox. “We will be there to take care of the bikers and to help if anything goes wrong.”
Unfortunately flooding in central New York last year obstructed the Riverside Ride. But “even two days before it was scheduled, I had people calling to sign up,”said Fox.
After the flooding last year, the Rotary Club did a survey of the village identifying households struggling with excessive water damage. “We gave them ‘Bainbridge Bucks’ which were accepted by local merchants, who in turn were reimbursed by the Rotary Club. It worked phenomenally well, we were able to help around 100 families,” said Fox.
Fox is an avid cyclist and has been a long time member of Bainbridge’s Rotary. Six years ago, Fox organized a 100-mile bike ride among friends and got 15 people to participate using just word of mouth. “There was a good response and the Rotary Club is always trying to come up with fundraisers that incorporate member’s passions,” said Fox. Over the subsequent years, the event has grown substantially and last year, 50 cyclists participated.
“We usually raise around $1,500 and the cyclists have traditionally been from the tri-town and Chenango County vicinity,” said Fox. For the first time though, Fox has utilized online registration in preparation for the event. “It seems to be bringing people in from further away and registration is already up by at least 15 percent over previous years,” he said. “Based on calls and internet registration, it seems as though there is more interest this year then any other.”
Fox said he hopes to be able to ride bits and pieces of the event, but that he usually has to help out driving the Sag Wagons that follow the bikers. “And my poor wife, she barbecues some 80 pieces of pork for the bike riders so of course I have to help her out too,” he laughed.
“It’s the beginning of fall, the leafs are turning, the cool air is just right, and the Susquehanna and Unadilla are at their most beautiful this time of year,” said Fox. “The courses are not competitive. In fact the whole event is really laid back and fun. We usually hear a lot of chit chat amongst the cyclists.”
