Cyclones sweep home games

NORWICH – There was a lot of action this past Sunday with the Cyclones’ Pop Warner teams sweeping their opponents at Alumni Field.
The Norwich Cyclones “C” team started the day off with a 23-6 victory over Whitestown.
Jacob Davis opened the scoring in the first quarter with an 11-yard touchdown run, and then added the extra point on a pass from Carson Maynard. David Berger added a two-point safety in the second, with Elijah Rodriguez running for a 14-yard touchdown and also kicking an extra point. Noah Bufalini completed the Cyclones scoring with a 19-yard touchdown for a 23 –0 halftime lead. Berger led the defense with J.T.Vinal, Benson McGillicuddy, Rodriguez, Collin Montgomery, Dante Geislinger and Nick Loscavio also playing tough “D.”
The Cyclones “B” team upended Whitestown 28-0. Drew Walsh, behind the gold offensive line, reached the end zone on a 24-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Walsh also scored from 51 yards to make it 16-0 at the half. Cameron Ivan kicked both two-point conversions in the first half. In the third, Payton Stirone returned a punt to the 15 setting up his four-yard touchdown. Stirone also added a 22-yard touchdown in the fourth. Drew Walsh led the defense with key defensive plays by Stirone, Zack Mills, Thomas Parrella, Devin Miller, Joshua Mioduszewski, and Bradley Walley. Jonathan Merrill also had a game-ending interception.
The Cyclones “A” team defeated old-time rival Ilion 8-0 in a hard-fought contest. The Cyclones held Ilion at the five-yard line in the third quarter before mounting a furious seven-play drive to paydirt. A 15-yard pass from Zack Race to Ty Rifanburg gave the Cyclones a first down. Jonathan Heggie rumbled 43 yards on the end reverse. Nick Stirone ran for 23 yards setting up Cole Rifanburg’s 21-yard touchdown run. Rifanburg also kicked the extra point. The Cyclones defense, spending most of the game on the field, was led by Paden Burlison, Marcus Benjamin, Owen Blackman, Brennan Slater, Alex “Big Bird” Wehrli and the Rifanburg brothers.
The Cyclones D team also played Whitestown in a non-score-keeping game. The D team showed excellent teamwork and skill, and consistently outplayed their opponents.
The Cyclones visit Utica this Sunday in key matchups in all age divisions. The D team plays at 11 a.m., C team at 1 p.m., B team at 3 p.m., and A team at 5 p.m.
