Norwich Dance Club ready to celebrate Ballroom Week
NORWICH – The week of Sept. 21-28 marks the National Ballroom Dance celebration and the Norwich Dance Club has expanded its community initiative to celebrate and open the doors to the community. The celebration begins with a Big Band Dance on Friday. A 12-piece professional band will play big band favorites such as swing, cha-cha, waltz and Latin swings. A free Waltz lesson will be offered from 6 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 21 prior to the dance at their ballroom located in downtown Norwich.
The Norwich Dance Club was established in 2008 as a community group with the goal of learning, enjoying and sharing the joy of ballroom dance in the region. This social dance group has over 100 members and has delivered multiple public performances, historical exhibits, and dances to local nursing homes. Over 50 students learn Latin and ballroom dance at the Norwich Dance Club each month.
Founder Martha Ryan commented about this year’s celebration, “This month is also our anniversary. Our milestones as a community group are recorded with laughter. Our largest accomplishments are the memories of performances we have done for nursing homes.”
Ryan also said that this month they also celebrate the memory of co-founder Bob Arnell. “Bob, a polished professional musician, built a ballroom so that he could play with his band. I was passionate about ballroom dancing because it is excellent social interaction activity and great fun. When we blended his musical talent with my dancing obsession, the Norwich Dance Club was born. Here we are, celebrating our fourth anniversary; thanks to his gift of our ballroom and the strong foundation he left for us to enjoy ballroom dancing.”
A series of free events have been planned for the community which includes; free Latin dance lesson on Wednesday, Sept. 26 beginning at 6 p.m. and the Ballroom Dance Open House on Sept. 28 at 6 p.m. Ballroom dance demonstrations and open dance time will be open to the public 21 years and older. Refreshments and a historical exhibit will be featured at their ballroom located in Downtown Norwich at 15 South Broad St.
According to Ryan, the open house will also recognize key supporters: “Another reason to celebrate is the support we received from community organizations like the Guernsey Memorial Library, The RC Smith Foundation, The Chenango County Council of the Arts and the Chenango County Historical Society, The Evening Sun, and also from the Arnell family who made this milestone possible.”
