NORWICH - Norwich defeated Afton for third time in as many seasons, and earned its third win of the season in the process on Wednesday evening.
Curtis Woodard put Norwich up a goal early, then a Woodard crossing pass to Cameron Prime was finished on the far right post for the two-goal halftime lead. “We possessed the ball better today and played much better defense,” said Norwich coach Steve Prime. “We only made two mistakes and one of them led to a goal, but we had the ball in their end quite a bit instead of defending in our end all of the time.”
Prime and Chris Trevisani had second-half goals for Norwich (3-6), who play at Seton Catholic Central Friday.

Jared Hanslmaier scored on a free kick late in the first half. The ball skipped past the B-G keeper and just crossed the goal line. “Both teams had plenty of opportunities to score, but the goalies from both teams frequently came up with brilliant saves,” said UV coach Ryan Houck.
Kyle King made 11 saves for UV (6-2-1); Brandt McCall had five stops for the Bobcats (3-4-1).

HERKIMER – Sustained offensive aggression paid off for the Marauders Wednesday afternoon.
Shelby Scheffler completed a hat trick scoring the game-winning goal at the 5:55 mark of overtime to lift the Marauders to a road victory. S-E never led in the game until the final goal, and needed a Scheffler goal with eight minutes left in regulation to send the game into extra minutes.
“Shelby plays on the weak side, and a lot of deflections come her way,” said S-E coach Sheila Cooman. “She was very patient, and it was almost like she stood for a moment (with the ball) on the last goal. She didn’t panic and took a good shot.”
The win was the second this season for S-E in five games. The Marauders play Whitesboro on Saturday at 4 p.m. at SUNY Oneonta.

NORWICH – Owego stopped Norwich’s seven-game winning streak winning all three three-set matches in Wednesday’s STAC non-division matchup.
It was a major improvement for the Tornado over the first meeting this season, said NHS coach John Stewart, who had wins from Kristi Orioli at first singles and Breanna Cashman at third singles. “The first time we played Owego this season, it was a 6-1 final and we never had a shot,” Stewart said. “This late in the season, we were right on the cusp of beating them. It shows we have improved and are still our there competing, but it’s still tough to lose the close ones.”
Norwich (7-3) hosts Chenango Valley Friday.

G-MU forged a 1-1 nine nine minutes into the second half when Mackenzie Talbot scored unassisted. That goal stood up for the next 17 minutes. Making 19 saves for the Raiders was keeper Bri MacPherson, who drew praise from head coach Tina Cole. “Bri was getting her hands on everything, and just played a great game,” Cole said.

With many swimmers shuffled into different slots, the Tornado still managed five personal-best performances, among those a first-place finish from Courtney Llewellyn in the 500-yard freestyle. Picking up multiple victories on the day were Taylor Zieno, Erin Gawronski, Mary Beth Ward, Rachel Zieno, and Lauren Llewellyn. Lauren Fitch added a first in diving, too.
“In meets like this, it gives me an opportunity to have kids swim splits in events they don’t normally compete,” said NHS coach Kevin Diefenbacher. “This will help us down the road when we’re trying to put together our relays for the sectional meets.”
Norwich hosts Johnson City on Friday.

The Marauders’ boys defeated Waterville, while the girls topped Little Falls. “It was a really hilly course, and it took our kids some extra time to push through it,” said S-E coach Anne Geary of the meet.
Ian Benedict topped the Marauders’ boys placing 10th out of 44 runners in 19:38. Gabby Huff was 24th for the girls clocking 27:45.
