Smithville couple loses home following devastating fire

SMITHVILLE – A Town of Smithville couple is without a home following a devastating fire Wednesday afternoon that closed down a portion of County Road 2 for approximately three hours and completely destroyed the residence.
First responders to the scene reported the fire was well involved upon arrival – shortly after 2:30 p.m. – and immediately called for aid from outlying fire departments, according to emergency officials. Firefighters from the Smithville, Greene, McDonough and Willet fire departments all responded, as well as the Chenango County Bureau of Fire, spending a little over an hour knocking down the blaze.
The Triangle Fire Department was on standby throughout the incident, and the American Red Cross was contacted to aid the couple, whose names were not released. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is believed to be an older television set, purchased by the couple at a yard sale.
Chenango County Fire Coordinator Matt Beckwith said the fire most likely started in a back bedroom of the house, quickly spreading from there. Those first on the scene, he added, observed “heavy fire blowing out the front of the house,” which was a complete loss.
