Norwich tennis team clinches STAC East title
GIRLS’ TENNIS
Norwich 6, Johnson City 1
NORWICH – Norwich’s move to the STAC East division this year yielded the program’s first division title in at least two decades.
The Tornado swept the three doubles matches with seniors Cassie Sutton and Taylor Stroh earning the decisive fourth point in a rout of Johnson City Monday afternoon.
“I thought we would be around the .500 mark thisy year and have a good shot at a division title,” said Norwich coach John Stewart, whose club improved to 9-3 on the season. “We proved this year that we’re a tough team to beat, that’s what it comes down to.”
At singles, second-year players Jenni Borfitz and Breanna Cashman won at second and third singles, while first-year varsity player, Makenzie Maynard, allowed just two total games in a straight sets victory.
Sutton and Stroh were impressive against JC’s top doubles team taking the victory, 6-3, 6-4. “Cassie and Krissy have been playing some good tennis, they just haven’t had the wins,” Stewart said. “They played very well tonight to seal the win, and you could say this was their break-out match.”
Caroline Stewart and Taylor Stroh along with Steph Elder and Cohley Acenowr captured three sets wins to complete the NHS victory.
Norwich is at Chenango Forks Wednesday.
