Oxford Village votes 3 to 2 to draft moratorium
OXFORD – The Village of Oxford is so far the only municipality in Chenango County that has voted to pursue a one-year moratorium on natural gas development and hydraulic fracturing within its borders.
Last night, acting on a referral from the Village Planning Board, trustees voted 3 to 2 to draft what Mayor Terry Stark called “a legal document that takes into consideration everyone’s concerns.”
About 50 people, both for and against shale drilling, came to the village board meeting. Stark said one of the trustees who voted against the proposal instead wanted the village to pursue an outright ban on drilling in the village.
