Norwich Pharmaceuticals gives $14,000 contribution for Gordon Park upgrades

NORWICH – A generous donation from Norwich Pharmaceuticals is paving the way to embellish Gordon Park, bringing a rejuvenated appearance to the heart of downtown Norwich.
This year marks Norwich Pharmaceuticals’ 125th anniversary and in recognition, the company is investing in the community where its success began. NPI business leaders met with city officials in Gordon Park on the corner of West Main and North Broad streets yesterday to present a $14,000 contribution to be used toward park upgrades. The changes will include new benches and lights to match those in found in East and West Park, as well as a new fountain to stand in the center of it all.
“As Norwich Pharmaceutical celebrates 125 years as a company, we are grateful for the dedication of our employees and the local community, whom together are responsible for this amazing achievement,” said NPI President of Commercial Operations Terry Novak. “Our contribution to the Norwich Business Improvement District for the Gordon Park renovation further reinforces our commitment to continue supporting the community in which we work.”
Earlier this week, NPI addressed the Friends of the Park group – a small community volunteer organization that renovated East and West Parks in 2011. Friends President Eric Larsen addressed the Norwich City Council last week, which gave the organization the go-ahead to manage the project and the funds.
“We thought if Norwich Pharmaceuticals was willing to underwrite the efforts, we can do what we can to help out,” Larsen said. “I don’t think there are any disagreements that it would be a nice addition to the park. It will be great to see these upgrades that will tie into the same theme as the other parks.”
Larsen went on to say that it’s likely that proposed upgrades will exceed the cost of NPI’s $14,000 contribution. To offset additional costs, the Norwich Business Improvement District is eligible to utilize leftover funds granted to the city in 2010 for the purpose of streetscape improvements.
Former director of the BID and current Friends of the Parks member Pegi LoPresti explained that leftover grant money needs to be used before money is no longer available and the grant is closed out. The BID Board of Directors allocated the extra funds in support of carrying out the Gordon Park project. “If we can pull resources to make improvements to that little park, it will be a great addition to downtown,” she said. “This is an awesome opportunity and it’s a wonderful way for Norwich Pharmaceuticals to be memorialized in our downtown community.”
Gordon Park, dedicated to the memory of the late Albert Gordon by his wife and children in 1990, will keep its name in his honor, noted Larsen.
