STAC Semifinals
Horseheads 6, Norwich 1
HORSEHEADS – Unbeaten Horseheads won the majority of the big points, and as a consequence advanced to the STAC finals Thursday.
Norwich (11-4) had just one victory, a three-setter from Makenzie Maynard at fourth singles. Maynard outlasted Katie Reasons, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
“The match was a lot closer than the scores indicate,” said Norwich coach John Stewart. “In the end, I was proud of the way we competed. We played the way we have all year. We challenged balls and made them win points.”
Of the 123 games in the match, 44 went to deuce points with a minimum of six deuce points in every contested matchup. Stewart said his team lost 70 percent of those deuce points.
In the third doubles matchup, Horseheads’ Shannon Donovan and Chloe Johnson defeated the Tornado’s Cohley Acenowr and Steph Elder, 6-3, 6-4. Seven of the 19 games went to deuce points with the Raiders’ pair taking six of those seven. “They still may have won if we won our fair share of deuce points, but losing more than two-thirds of those points is tough to overcome,” Stewart said.
Norwich competes in the Class B sectionals next week.
