Chenango Forks, Tully win team titles at S-E Invitational
CROSS COUNTRY
SHERBURNE – Chenango Forks and Tully each placed at least three of five scoring runners among the top-10 finishers, and came away with the team titles at the 30th Annual Sherburne-Earlville Cross Country Invitational Saturday.
Luke Warpus and Mike George placed second and fourth for the Blue Devils to lead them by runner-up Cazenovia. Caz’s Sean Satchwell was the overall boys winner timing 18:26 over the difficult Marauders course.
S-E’s Ian Benedict topped the host club placing fifth in 19:30.
On the girls’ side, Tully’s Ellen Jaworski finished first overall among the 37 ladies at the starting line to spearhead her club’s victory. Remsen, who did not have enough runners to score, placed four runners among the top eight.
Gabby Huff led the Marauders taking 22nd in 26:37.

FENTON – Norwich was unable to duplicate its win over Chenango Valley from earlier this season dropped a one-goal loss to the Warriors Friday.
After a scoreless first half, CV put together a pair of goals with the lone answer coming from NHS’s Cameron Prime. Prime scored unassisted on a direct kick. “I thought the goal would spark us, but we just didn’t do the job,” said Norwich coach Steve Prime. “We’re hoping for a better showing next week.”

The combination of Julie Yacovoni and Maggie Caroompas combined for 22 kills and 21 assists respectively. “It was another great match,” said Norwich coach Shelly Alger. “We struggled with returning serve, but the volleys were great by both teams. We played to our potential.”
Katie Callahan had eight aces and four assists for Norwich, while Taylor Cook led at the net with seven kills and five stuff blocks.

Kera Shepler had 11 straight service points in the opening game to lead Oxford to the early advantage. Shepler had seven aces and seven assists in the match, while Morgann Westcott and Teresa Ivarson also served seven aces apiece. “It always turns into an exciting game when B-G and Oxford meet,” said Oxford coach Kim Martin. “Unfortunately, we we were unable to take a third game. Our girls never gave up and worked as a determined team.”

AFTON – Coming off a five-game loss to Hancock on Friday night, Afton earned its fourth win of the season outlasting Unatego in five games.
Alisha Hubbard had eight aces, 14 assists, and seven kills for the Crimson Knights in Saturday’s victory. Bekah Prezorski topped the Afton front line with 12 kills.
Prezorski and Hubbard again topped the Knights in the loss to Hancock with seven and six kills respectively. Sabrina Button spearheaded the defense with 10 digs.

CHENANGO FORKS – Chenango Forks’ Samantha Suer won impressively in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly to key her club’s win over Greene Friday night.
Suer narrowly missed breaking the 25-second mark in the sprint freestyle event timing 25.02 seconds. Suer eclipsed one minute in the butterfly timing a 59.55.
“We’ve gone through the killer part of our schedule the last four meets,” said Greene coach Mike Platta. “We’re now going to hit the portion of the season where we are facing teams we are evenly matched against.”
Jenny Yeager took the 200 free for Greene, Julia Arboit captured the 100 free, Chelsea Carlson won the 100 backstroke, and Erica Bentley earned a first in the 100 breaststroke as Greene closed with wins in the final three events.
The Trojans host Odessa-Montour Tuesday.

SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville’s Emma Hodges scored on a penalty corner with 9:01 left in the second half giving the Marauders a win over Hamilton Friday.
Hodges, who assisted on Megan Viera’s goal 5 1/2 minutes into the second half, tallied off a pass from Shelby Scheffler. Scheffler picked up a rebound off the goalie’s pads, and slid a pass to Hodges for the tip in. “We played very well again, and were much more aggressive in the circle than we have been,” said S-E coach Sheila Cooman. “We really controlled the tempo of the game the entire game and we kept them on their heels.”
S-E hosts Sauquoit Valley on Tuesday.

Gemma Godfrey provided the winning goal for S-E in the second overtime getting a pass from Mikayla Solloway.
After a scoreless first half, S-E built a 2-0 lead with Kayla Belush tallying unassisted at 23:48, and Jordan VanAlthuis scoring her first goal of the season seven minutes later. Waterville tied the game in the final nine minutes with the tying goal coming from Alexis Stetson at the 2:02 mark.
At Holland Patent Friday afternoon, the host team’s Ashley Stanton netted the game’s lone tally 10 minutes into the second half in a shutout of the Marauders. “We were flat the entire game and never got our feet out from under us,” said S-E coach Kylie Davis of the loss.
