Sherburne-Earlville beaten in Section III playoff debut

Skaneateles 49, Sherburne-Earlville 22
SKANEATELES – The quickest path from point A to point B is by air, and Skaneateles proved that Friday night against the ground-oriented Marauders.
Ranked among the top teams in state, the Lakers threw for 368 yards and six TD passes in rolling past the Marauders in the first round of the Section III Class C playoffs.
Conor Herr tossed five TD passes on 24 of 33 attempts finishing with 298 yards. Later in the game, backup signal-caller Tyler Parr completed a 70-yard TD pass, that one coming after the S-E defensive back fell down in deep coverage. “Their quarterback reads plays well and he doesn’t make mistakes,” said S-E fourth-year coach Mike Jasper. “If it’s not there, he runs it or gets the ball out of there.”
S-E (4-3) was not without its moments running for 344 yards. Still, early opportunities to score slipped away, and the host Lakers cashed in on just about every scoring chance. “We didn’t close the deal,” Jasper said. “You can’t leave points out there, especially with their offense. They lit it up throwing the ball for sure.”
Herr threw TD passes to Max Dwyer, Max Weiss, and Steven Bright in the first half, and Weiss added a TD run for the 28-0 halftime lead. The margin swelled to 42-0 in the third after Herr connected with all-state receiver Jake Cooney on a pair of scoring tosses.
S-E running back Devven Ferris had his best day as a Marauders back finishing with 226 yards on 20 carries. Ferris, returning to the field after a one-week absence, had TD runs of two and 55 yards in the fourth, and backup Cameron Whaley added a one-yard TD run late in the game.
“We certainly moved the ball decently,” Jasper said. “It was just a tough draw for us, and we knew that coming in. This is something we have to grow and learn from. We got a taste of the playoff atmosphere, and we want to compete in these games. It shouldn’t matter who we play.”
The Marauders’ opponent next week was not known at press time, although Jasper speculated that Section III will attempt to pair first-round playoff losers against one another based on their proximity.

Windsor 24, Bainbridge-Guilford 7
WINDSOR – After scoring on its first possession of the game, B-G’s remaining offensive possessions were more like cameo appearances.
The Bobcats’ defense spent the majority of the time on the gridiron Friday night as the offense ran just 30 plays in a non-league loss to the Black Knights.
Isma’il Griffin had a three-yard TD run in the first quarter for Windsor, and caught a 12-yard TD pass from Josh Cady to cap the scoring. Griffin had 86 hard yards on 24 carries to lead the Windsor running game that averaged barely over three yards a tote.
Sticktoitiveness paid off for the Black Knights, who sprinkled in a number of passes from quarterback Josh Cady to keep the chains moving. “I thought our defensive line did a great job stuffing their run, and there weren’t any big running plays at all,” said B-G coach Tim Mattingly. “Their passing did hurt us, and Cady had a couple of TDs.”
B-G’s most prolific passing/receiving combination this season led to the club’s lone score. Corbin Palmer found tight end Austin Bauerle on a 22-yard scoring connection. Following that drive, three turnovers ended drives prematurely, and the Black Knights were playing keep-away when they had the ball.
“They really keyed on our running game,” Mattingly said. “We just weren’t out there that much, and they did a great job defensively against us.”
B-G is likely in the Class D playoffs, although final pairings for next week’s game have not been scheduled, Mattingly said. “If I had to guess, I think we’re looking at a six or seven seed,” Mattingly said.

Greene 22, Whitney Point 8
WHITNEY POINT - A trying, emotional week at Greene culminated in the club’s fifth win this season Saturday, a victory that secured the program’s eighth consecutive winning season.
To boot, the Trojans had three pivotal starters miss all or most of this weekend’s game making the win that much sweeter. “We were a little short-handed, and I know that every team is dealing with injuries this time of year,” said assistant coach Dave Gorton. Gorton was installed as the head coach for one game while nine-year head coach Tim Paske served a one-game suspension.
Paske was suspended indefinitely by the school’s administration last Tuesday, but in a release by the school late Friday afternoon, a resolution was announced with Paske returning to normal coaching duties today. “We were a little shaky at the start,” Gorton said. “Coach Paske and the rest of the assistants have put a lot of time into this program, and you can see the rewards on the scoreboard. We’re glad to have him back.”
The Trojans’ offense settled down in the second quarter scoring a pair of touchdowns. Dan Treadwell reached the endzone on a 41-yard run, and backup quarterback Cole Browning, stepping in for injured starter Joe Beckwith, dashed six yards to paydirt. Browning’s two-point run raised his team’s lead to 14-0 at the half.
Whitney Point (1-6) pared the deficit to 14-6 early in the fourth when Jake Lynch scored on an 11-yard run. Moments later, Greene responded as Treadwell scampered 80 yards for a touchdown on the ensuing kickoff. It was the third special teams touchdown for Treadwell this season and fifth for the Trojans.
“Gradually we got some confidence and gained some first downs,” Gorton said. “The defense really came up big. We had a couple of lost fumbles in the first half, but our defense made great plays to keep them out of the endzone.”
Treadwell’s 87 yards rushing on six carries led the Greene attack. The Trojans play at Norwich Friday in a non-league game.

Moravia 28, Oxford 7
OXFORD – For the third straight week, Oxford found itself in a deep hole in the first quarter, one that ultimately led to a defeat.
Moravia held the Blackhawks to a season-low 57 rushing yards, and the three-TD lead in the first quarter lifted it to a second win in seven outings. “We didn’t play very well, and they played pretty good,” said Oxford coach Ray Dayton. “I wish I had some magic words to fix it all.”
Cody Spaulding scored the first of his three TDs hauling in a 35-yard TD reception from Dylan Powers. Moravia then executed an onside kick to retain possession. Spaulding capped a drive that started from just inside Oxford territory running for a three-yard score. Late in the opening stanza, Spaulding’s 17-yard TD sojourn combined with the two-point conversion had the host Blackhawks down 22 points.
“We were down 14 points before we even knew what hit us,” Dayton said. “We made some good adjustments on defense in the second half, but our offense had a hard time moving the ball. They didn’t do anything we had not seen on film, they just played really solid.”
Oxford lone bright spot was a 77-yard TD hookup in which quarterback Jody Smith found junior receiver Cameron Heggie. Heggie had three catches for 116 yards, and Smith threw for 155 yards, although he was intercepted four times by the Moravia defense.
Senior Oxford back Paul Wonka ran for a season-low 61 yards, but in the loss established a new Oxford career rushing mark passing previous record-holder Mike Chrystie (3,341 yards). Wonka has 3,387 career yards with two games to play.
