Murray, Jeffrey place 2nd and 3rd for Norwich

MARATHON – In the unseeded race at the Marathon Invitational Saturday, Norwich juniors Matt Murray and Robert Jeffrey were near the top of the 142-runner field placing second and third respectively to pace the Tornado harriers to a sixth-place finish out of 18 scoring teams.
Murray and Jeffrey, who have flip-flopped as the top Norwich runner on a meet-to-meet basis, timed 17:53 ad 17:57. Nuri Harper was 43rd for NHS clocking in at 19:23. "Matt and Robert have had great seasons for us, and Saturday they worked together as a team," said Norwich coach Shaun Horan.
NHS's girls wound up eighth out of 12 teams with Martha Clemens 24th out of 89 finishers with a time of 22:38, and Sydney Chaffee taking 38th in 24:05.

Center State Conference League Championships
ORISKANY – At the Center State Conference meet Saturday in Oriskany, S-E sophomore Ian Benedict placed 28th out of 104 runners, and was named a Center State Conference all-star based on his top-30 finish.
Benedict timed a 19:53 over the sloppy 3.1-mile course at Oriskany that was soaked by Friday’s rain. Adding a 53rd was junior Ryan Palmiter in 21:11. “We’re such a young team with a sophomore and junior leading us, and the next three being freshmen,” said S-E coach Anne Geary. “We have all but one of our top seven coming back, and we’re already looking forward to next season.”
Gabby Huff placed 69th (27:28) for the S-E girls leading an incomplete squad. “Even though we ran incomplete, we were upbeat considering the conditions,” Geary said.
The Marauders run in the Adirondack Invitational Saturday.

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

Norwich 100, Windsor 74
NORWICH - Norwich leveled its season mark at 5-5 on the season toppling Windsor at Echentile Natatorium Friday.
Eighth-grader Danika Tworkowsky swam season-bests winning the 50- and 100-yard freestyles in 26.69 and 59.65 respectively. Tworkowsky’s swims were two of six personal-bests for the Tornado, who are heading into the home stretch of the season. “We’re trying to get our times down for seedings at sectionals, and we accomplished some of that,” said Norwich coach Kevin Diefenbacher. “Friday was what we called a captain’s meet where our captains got to set the lineup. What they lined up was pretty decent, and it was a fun thing.”
Junior Erin Gawronski also won two individual events for Norwich taking the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly. Other winners were Courtney Llewellyn (200 individual medley), Ravyn Benedict (100 backstroke), and Nicole Mealey (100 breaststroke).
Norwich wraps up its regular season Tuesday when it hosts Section III’s Holland Patent.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Otselic Valley 4, DeRuyter 2
SOUTH OTSELIC – On senior recognition day, all four OV goals came from seniors as the Vikings reached 10 wins on the season Thursday against DeRuyter.
Brent Rasmussen had two goals – the first and last for OV – and Trevor Marston’s goal in the 26th minute came less than two minutes after DeRuyter tied the game at 1-1.
“It was our best team effort of the season,” said OV coach Jacob Preston. “We passed the ball unselfishly all night. Peter Robinson played a great game for us. He had to be involved offensively and defensively, and he was.”
Brandon Huntley added a goal for OV (10-4) with 10 minutes left in the game.
The Vikings are idle until their Section III tournament first-round game.

OXFORD – Against unbeaten MAC frontrunner Harpursville, the Blackhawks dropped their Thursday match in four games to the Hornets, 25-16, 22-25, 25-12, 25-15.
Courtney Hardy had 10 aces for Harpursville (16-0) and Erin Avery added a match-high 12 kills.
Morgann Westcott topped Oxford’s linejup with three aces, three digs, and three kills.
