NBT’s ‘Wall of Art’ honors Chenango’s Civil War volunteers

NORWICH – Volunteers from Norwich and the surrounding areas who served in the Civil War are commemorated in a painting on display through the end of October on NBT Bank’s Wall of Art at the bank’s South Broad Street office in Norwich.
Titled the “Departure of the 114th Regiment” the painting, on loan from the Chenango County Historical Society, is the work of Norwich artist Robert Ward. Ward, who passed way in 1997, is noted for his many paintings that merged his artistic skills with his fascination for local history.
Many of his pieces featuring historical scenes from throughout Chenango County, have graced the walls of Southern Tier businesses. This particular piece hung for over 30 years in a local restaurant before it was donated to the Chenango County Historical Society. The painting pays tribute to the more than 1,000 volunteers from Chenango and Madison Counties, ranging in age from 18 to 45, who answered President Abraham Lincoln’s call for volunteers to serve in the Union Army during the Civil War.
According to historical accounts of their departure, people gathered along both sides of the canal route followed by the flotilla of ten boats to cheer and salute the volunteers. This painting honors all those volunteers for the heroism and valor they displayed.
