NBT’s ‘Wall of Art’ honors Chenango’s Civil War volunteers

NORWICH – Volunteers from Norwich and the surrounding areas who served in the Civil War are commemorated in a painting on display through the end of October on NBT Bank’s Wall of Art at the bank’s South Broad Street office in Norwich.

Titled the “Departure of the 114th Regiment” the painting, on loan from the Chenango County Historical Society, is the work of Norwich artist Robert Ward. Ward, who passed way in 1997, is noted for his many paintings that merged his artistic skills with his fascination for local history.

The painting pays tribute to the more than 1,000 volunteers from Chenango and Madison Counties, ranging in age from 18 to 45, who answered President Abraham Lincoln’s call for volunteers to serve in the Union Army during the Civil War.
