Youth Bureau offers free fall, winter activities for kids

NORWICH – As winter weather draws closer, the City of Norwich Youth Bureau is ready to embrace the snow and ice that comes along with it.
The Youth Bureau has rolled out another session of fall and wintertime activities and is currently accepting sign-ups to participate. This year brings with it a number of favorite winter past times and opportunities for young people in the city, as well as the Towns of Norwich, North Norwich, Plymouth, Preston and Pharsalia. As always, all programs are free and open to the public.
Last year, open slots for many of the fall and winter programs filled up quickly. The junior bowling program for kids in grades 1-4 , which was held for the first time last year at the Norwich Elks Lodge, was a huge success, according to city Youth Bureau Director Robert Mason; but with only 20 initial places available in the program, it’s quickly filling up again this year, he added. Junior bowling begins Saturday, Nov. 10. Bowling for grades 5-12 will also be available later in the season at Plaza Lanes in Norwich.
Additionally, some of the favorites for youth in the area will return again this year. Junior wresting for kids in kindergarten to grade six will be held at the Norwich High School wrestling room. Last year, 95 youth enrolled in the wrestling program, Mason noted. A similar turnout is expected this time around. Wrestling sign ups will begin at 6 p.m. on Nov. 7 at the High School wrestling room before the program officially gets underway on Nov. 13.
The Youth Bureau is also gearing up for winter time favorites. While registration for winter activities won’t be held until Dec. 5, plans are already in the works to host volleyball for grades 3-6, indoor pre-season softball practice for grades K-6, and indoor pre-season baseball practice for ages 8-12.
Moreover, the skating facility on Borden Avenue will open in December, as soon as there’s ice. Last year’s warmer than usual temperatures kept the facility closed for most of the season, but hopes are that this year will bring in some colder weather and much more suitable skating conditions. Currently, the Youth Bureau is also looking for facility attendants to lend a helping hand at the ice rink. Applications are available at the Youth Bureau office in City Hall from 9 a.m. to noon, or at the city’s Human Resources office.
