Harlem Rockets make a play for Oxford Friday night

OXFORD – The Oxford Academy high school gym will bare witness to astounding feats of athleticism at 7 p.m. Friday. The Harlem Rockets will once again be visiting Chenango County to thrill and entertain viewers of all ages, with their jaw-dropping display of basketball tricks and sidesplitting family-friendly comedy for a fundraiser expected to pack the house.
According to a press release, the Rockets have played over 2,500 games in the team’s 16 years and have never suffered from a single defeat. The Rockets boast an impressive roster featuring many renowned team members such as former Harlem Globetrotter Clarence “Mugsy” Leggett, Nike commercial star Cliff “Jet Blue” Malone, and James “Speedy” Williams, whose long list of accolades also includes Nike commercial work as well as performances in the MTV Awards and “Above the Rim,” along side Tupac Shakur and Duane Martin.
The Harlem Rockets are known for their ability to make people of all ages break down with laughter by incorporating many of the youngsters and audience members into each act.
“I enjoyed it so much when I went the last time they were in Oxford and my eight year old girl loved it,” said Dawn Golden, member of the Oxford Baseball Booster Club. The Booster Club is cosponsoring the event with Fred’s Inn, which has donated hotel rooms for the Rockets’ stay.
The event is part of an effort to raise money to send the Oxford varsity baseball team to Florida during the 2013 spring break, for the Disney Spring Training Camp held at the ESPN World Wide Sports Complex in Orlando, beginning April 1. “It is just a fantastic opportunity for the kids, many of whom have never even been out of the state,” said Golden, whose own son is a senior on the baseball team. “We have been talking about doing it for years and have finally gotten enough gung-ho parents to make it happen,” she said, adding how excited the kids already are.
Friday, the Harlem Rockets will once again face-off against the Oxford Hot Shots, a team comprised of many of Oxford Academy’s faculty members. “The Hot Shots might not win Friday, but they are still going to have a lot of fun,” said Golden. “The Rockets put on a great show, which is why we wanted them back so much, and the kids love getting to watch their teachers play.” The last time the Rockets came to town, they packed the gym to max capacity and the event was completely sold out.
Advance tickets are available for $6 for students/seniors, $8 for adults, and are sold at Bartle’s Pharmacy, NBT in Oxford, the Oxford High School Office, or by contacting Golden at 843-7107. Tickets at the door will be $8 for students/seniors and $10 for adults.
