Three plead guilty, two others arraigned in county court

NORWICH – Five individuals charged with a variety of misdemeanor and felony crimes appeared in county court on Monday and Thursday last week, three pleading guilty and another pair not guilty during their arraignment.
• Dustin W. Boyles, 27, Norwich, pleaded guilty to second degree assault – a class D felony – and was sentenced to two years in state prison with three years post release supervision.
In January, Boyles was indicted on charges of second degree assault, a class D felony, and third degree assault, a class A misdemeanor, following an incident that occurred on or about Sept. 2 in the Town of Norwich. It was alleged that Boyles, with intent to cause serious physical injury to another person, punched a Valley Ridge Center for Intensive Treatment employee in the head, face and back, causing Zygomatic and lumbar spine fractures, according to his indictment.
According to Chenango County District Attorney Joseph McBride, Boyles has a “long history of violence” and will face a “substantially longer sentence” if he does not abide by the law following his release.
• Ross B. McKinney, 29, Norwich, pleaded guilty to second degree attempted assault and was sentenced to two to four years in state prison.
In March, McKinney was indicted on two counts of second degree assault, a class D felony, and two counts of third degree assault, an A misdemeanor. It was alleged that McKinney, on Feb. 15, 2012, at the Valley Ridge Center for Intensive Treatment facility, used a deadly weapon or dangerous instrument – an entertainment center door – with the intent to cause physical harm to another individual; in this case, a pair of CIT employees. According to his indictment, McKinney, a patient at the facility, used the door to intentionally strike the employees in the face, causing swelling, bruising and lacerations.
• Kelly A. Furlong, 31, Norwich, pleaded guilty to one count of second degree forgery, a class D felony, and was sentenced to one year of interim probation. If Furlong successfully completes her interim probation, the felony charge will be reduced to a misdemeanor, followed by a second probationary period. If Furlong were to violate the terms of her probation, she could face up to seven years in state prison.
In August, Furlong was indicted on two counts of second degree forgery, a class D felony, and fourth degree criminal possession of stolen property, a class E felony. It was alleged that Furlong, on or about July 9, 2012 – and with the intent to defraud, deceive or injure another party – did falsely make, complete or alter a written instrument, according to her indictment. Furlong is accused of forging another’s signature on an M&T Bank check in the amount of $200, and it was also alleged she was found in possession of another person’s M&T Bank debit card.
• Michael B. Vanderweert, 26, Guilford, pleaded not guilty to charges of second degree burglary, a class C felony; and petit larceny, a class A misdemeanor.
Indicted by a Chenango County grand jury in October, it’s alleged that Vanderweert, in September of 2012, did knowingly enter and unlawfully remain in a personal residence on County Road 38 in the Town of Guilford with the intent to commit a crime, stealing a safe, three rolls of quarters and a pair of 1960 class rings.
Vanderweert was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility and will re-appear in court at a later date.
• Russell W. Davis, 42, Norwich, pleaded not guilty to charges of fourth degree grand larceny and first degree scheme to defraud, both class E felonies; and second degree scheme to defraud, a class A misdemeanor.
Indicted by a Chenango County grand jury in October, it’s alleged that Davis, on or about Aug. 6 in the Town of Oxford, knowingly wrote a personal check for $700 from a checking account with insufficient funds, purchasing a 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier and refusing to return the vehicle to its original owner when contacted. It’s also alleged Davis wrote a second bad check to a local business, with both checks totaling $1,475.27.
Davis was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility and will re-appear in court at a later date.
