Cyclones cap perfect season
SAUQUOIT – Absolutely perfect!
The Norwich Cyclones’ “C” team won the organization’s first-ever state Pop Warner football championship with a 6-0 win over the New City Rams of Rockland County in the Empire State Classic tourney final Saturday afternoon at Sauquoit Valley High School.
The Cyclones finished the season with its first-ever 12-0 season before a large crowd of dedicated fans.
The Cyclones’ defense was led by JT Vinal III with a fumble recovery and a 26-yard interception return. Elijah Rodriguez and Austin Hatton were also strong with TD-saving tackles. Rodriguez added a fourth-quarter interception to seal the win. Jacob Davis and Benson McGillicuddy were big on D also as Norwich finished the season with three straight shutout wins against state-level competition
The Cyclones made four big fourth-down stops of one, two, and three yards, and a fourth-and-four inches stop by Vinal in the Rams’ backfield.
Davis scored the game’s only touchdown on a 31-yard run in the second quarter. The Cyclones also drove inside the New City 10-yard-line late in the fourth quarter only to come up a five yards short.
