Alcohol a factor in Rt. 12 collision, Sheriff’s Dept. says
NORTH NORWICH – A Sherburne man is facing one count of aggravated driving while intoxicated – as well as other misdemeanor charges and violations – following a Chenango County Sheriff’s Office investigation into a head-on collision that took place shortly before 5 p.m. Monday at 6792 State Highway 12 in the Town of North Norwich.
Richard Webb, 62, has been charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated and operation of a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol content of .18 of 1 percent or higher; having an open container in a motor vehicle; unlicensed operation; failure to keep right; and unlawful possession of marijuana.
The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office reports that Webb was travelling south on State Highway 12 when he veered into the northbound lane, striking Larry and Eleanor Hall, of Smyrna, head on. A third driver, Gina Acee, of Sherburne, was unable to stop and struck the Hall’s vehicle in the rear. Acee was uninjured, according to authorities, while both Larry and Eleanor Hall were transported to UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The North Norwich Fire Department, Sherburne EMS and Norwich EMS all responded to Monday’s accident, which shut down an approximate 4-mile stretch of State Highway 12 for more than an hour.
After an investigation, it was determined that Webb was operating a motor vehicle in an intoxicated condition and he was subsequently charged with the felony, deputies said. He will appear in court at a later date.
