SHERBURNE – Bainbridge-Guilford strategically maneuvered its lineup to create favorable matchups, and maximized its seven victories with six pins and a forfeit to edge the Marauders in a non-league dual meet Wednesday night.
Jamie Griswold and Justin Cirigliano, finalists at the Clyde Cole Tournament last weekend at 132 and 138 pounds respectively, each jumped two weight classes, and came away with pinfall wins. Griswold stuck Ryan Wilcox at 145 pounds in 1:59, while Cirigliano took a little longer pinning Brady Sopchak in 2:25.
“We had some great matches, and I thought we had a chance after the Meade (Brian) match,” said S-E head coach Bim Palmer. “But you never know what’s up Brandon’s (MacNaught, B-GA coach) sleeve.”
Meade had a spectacular comeback victory at 138 pounds. Fighting off his back in the first and second period, he trailed the Bears’ Tim Parsons 7-2, and was on the verge of getting pinned. Meade, still a relative newcomer to the sport, reversed his precarious position to garner the improbable pin at 3:17. “The one thing about Brian is that he never gives up,” Palmer said. “The B-GA kid kind of loosened his hold, and Brian took advantage.”
Sherburne-Earlville won the majority of the matches (eight of fifteen), but settled for three decision wins that netted just nine team points. Mike Trask rallied for a 10-9 win in the meet opener at 113 pounds, and Kevin Dunshee, coming off a finals appearance at the Clyde Cole, ground out a 10-4 victory over Brett Hubbard at 120.
“The big difference is that we gave up six (team points) in a couple matches where we thought it would be three, and we only got three in a couple matches where we thought we would get six,” Palmer said.
Sherburne-Earlville competes in the Ilion Duals this weekend, while the Bears are idle until Dec. 11 when they host Greene.

COOPERSTOWN – Cooperstown made hay at the free throw line Wednesday night outscoring the Marauders 21-1 from the charity stripe in Wednesday’s Center State Conference crossover game.
Elizabeth Millea hit two three-pointers and scored a game-high 19 points to lead Cooperstown, and Sumer Murdock added 16. “They’re a veteran team with a lot of seniors, and this is something we’ll learn from,” said S-E coach Karen Mulligan. “We knew it was important to be aggressive and get to the line, but we weren’t getting some of those calls. We needed to keep driving to the basket, but we weren’t aggressive enough.”
Jordan Van Althuis led S-E with 15 points, and Savannah Irwin’s three-pointer early in the second half had the Marauders as close as five points. “We never could quite get over the hump in the second half,” Mulligan said of her team’s comeback effort.
S-E hosts Bainbridge-Guilford Friday in the first round of its tip-off tournament.
