Pro-Tel showing growth in new city location

NORWICH – Pro-Tel is no longer just a telecomunications firm.
The company broadened its horizons as an employment agency in addition to its work in telecomunications and for several months, has been settling into its new home near the heart of downtown Norwich. It’s now in a position to bring even more opportunities to the local workforce, according to Pro-Tel executives, in a location that’s ideal for local job-seekers.
Pro-Tel People, the employment arm of Pro-Tel, made the move to the city in the fall, from its previous location on Route 12 South, nearly two miles outside city limits. Now housed in the former Children’s Center building at 1 Virginia Lane, the business is proving to be an exemplary resource for anyone seeking employment opportunities in the Norwich and Syracuse areas.
“Even when the rest of the economy doesn’t really seem to be going anywhere, this business is really starting to take off,” said Pro-Tel President and CEO Eric Burrell. “When everyone is saying that the economy is doom and gloom, we’re looking to hire here.”
According to Burrell, the agency has helped more than 300 people find work this year, 95 percent of whom reside in Chenango County. After finding employment, many – nearly 70 percent – are hired from temporary to permanent employment, he added. “The number of temporary to permanent hire positions by far outweighs just the temporary positions,” he said.
More than 120 people have found employment between Norwich and Syracuse just over the last few months and the company shows no sign of slowing any time soon, with more than 20 full-time and part-time positions still available. Jobs range from industrial and warehousing, to secretarial and engineering at various businesses throughout the area.
“One of our goals is to show people that there really are opportunities here in Norwich,” explained Pro-Tel Norwich Operations Manager Lindsay Drake. “We’re not just putting a body in these job vacancies; we’re putting skills in there. We like to support local businesses. We want individuals to know we are here and we’re competitive.”
In addition to ongoing efforts to find employment opportunities for local job-seekers, the company is also touting available office space within its newly renovated building on Virginia Lane.
“This is a chance for small businesses to take advantage of a facility up to par with its expectations,” said Burrell. “Small businesses that need space because they’re growing, or even if they’re a business that’s just starting up – there are a lot of luxuries available for them here.”
Available office space comes with a shared receptionist, accessible conference room and kitchen, phone service, wireless internet, and printing – “all the makings of a business that can’t afford to rent a huge office location,” Burrell added.
