NORWICH – Norwich junior Breanna Cashman made two defensive gems in the final 13 seconds to snuff out CV’s attempts at tying the game and preserve the Purple Tornado’s first win of the season Tuesday.
With CV down three and in possession of the ball, Cashman stole Maddie Staiger’s pass on the right wing with 13 seconds remaining. After NHS missed a pair of free throws, Cashman secured the win with a steal of Dani Forbidussi. Cashman cashed in on a single free throw with 1.5 seconds left to put the game out of reach.
CV did not take its first lead until two minutes were expired in the third quarter. Staiger hit a three ball to make it 33-31. The Warriors’ Maggie Gross drove for a three-point play, and baseline jumper from Forbidussi created a 41-38 lead entering the fourth.
Norwich combined its youth and veteran leadership to surge in the final period. Third-year varsity palyer Jenni Borfitz immediately tied the game 13 seconds into the fourth burying a three ball after an assist from senior fourth-year player Cassie Sutton. Sutton also had a three that raised the advantage to 52-46 with just over three minutes to play.
Along the way freshman newcomer Shelby Benjamin had a pair of big fourth-quarter buckets scoring on a layup off another Sutton feed, then driving to the basket for a layup on the Tornado’s next possession. First-year sophomore, Carin Kuhn, added two clutch free throws with 2:40 left in the fourth.
Sutton and Borfitz led Norwich (1-1) with 13 points apiece. Cashman scored 12 to go with five steals and three blocked shots.
Norwich hosts New Hartford Friday in the first round of the Norwich Pennysaver Tournament.
In the junior varsity game, Norwich also evened its mark at 1-1 beating CV, 48-39. Makenzie Maynard scored 12 points, while Meghan Komendarek and Savannah Williams bucketed 10 apiece.

MCGRAW - Backed by a fast start, McGraw cruised to a 19-point victory over Otselic Valley (3-2) Tuesday night.
Nick Cowen scored 20 points to lead McGraw, who led 20-5 after one period and 42-21 at halftime. “We came out really flat offensively in the first half, and they were playing extremely well,” said OV coach Dave Loomis. “We played okay after the first period, but we just couldn’t make up the ground we lost early on.”
Brandon Huntley had a season-high 15 points for OV, and Connor Smith added 10. The Vikings host Madison on Friday.

BAINBRIDGE - Two 2012 New York State Wrestling Tournament participants suffered early-season losses Tuesday night in the Trojan’s 15-point win over host B-G/Afton.
Joel Roselle bumped up two weight classes to upend the the Bears’ Mark Viviano, 8-5, in the 220-pound division. Viviano sported an unblemished mark this season wrestling primarily at 195 this season, and earned a 2012 state tourney bid in that weight class last season.
Later in the meet – and with Greene’s dual win already assured – the Bears gained some solace from the dual meet loss as junior Jamie Griswold knocked off defending sectional champion Dan Dickman, 6-5.
The Trojans created an early 18-0 bulge receiving forfeits at 170, 182, and 195 pounds to start the meet.

In an exhibition match, Edmeston’s Grey Bennis, wrestling with the UV team, defeated Unatego’s Riley Hanrahan at 182 pounds, 4-3. Hanrahan was a runner-up at Oxford’s Clyde Cole tourney, while Bennis placed third. UV’s Brittany Brown also won in an exhibition feature pinning Ben Peterson in 55 seconds.
