Oxford restarts Weight Watchers for faculty, students, public

OXFORD – Due to popular demand among Oxford Academy staff, Weight Watchers will once again be available after a year-long hiatus, with the first meeting taking place on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in the primary school’s multipurpose room.
The program will be open to both the public as well as to the student body. Students are strongly encouraged to attend, but will need to get a doctor’s permission to participate in the dietary portion of the program.
Weight Watchers provides participants with education on healthy eating as well as important support from people who understand what it feels like to struggle with weight loss. Education on healthy eating in Chenango County is necessary. According to data compiled by the New York State Department of Health, 34.8 percent of 7th and 10th graders are overweight or obese.
The 17-week Weight Watchers program was last implemented in 2011, and many participants saw marked success in reaching their weight loss goals.
“Oh, it helped me alright, but I’ve just been naughty,” said Liz O’Rourke, a member of the Academy staff who participated in the program. According to O’Rourke, while many of participants were helped by the program, interest waned as people met their goals. But after going for a year without group support, some of the participants have gained back the weight they lost.
Carol Williams from Weight Watchers will be acting as the leader of the Oxford group and has gone through the program herself. All of the Weight Watchers’ group leaders were once participants in the program, so they can relate well to the other participants whom they are guiding, she said. Group leaders are also weighed every two months to make sure they are maintaining healthy weights to preserve their integrity as leaders in the increasingly desperate war on obesity.
“Working with groups are a great way to keep weight off and help people, which is important because you don’t do it unless you like people,” said Williams. “I love to work with tight-knit work programs like Oxford’s because participants know each other and are particularly nurturing to one another,” she added.
The supportive element of the program is a critical component in each participant’s ability to successfully attain and maintain healthy weights. “Emotions are important as we all have things which can set us off, like someone’s comments, or when we beat ourselves up,” said Williams. But for those who are successful, the rewards are abundant. “Most of our participants are women and mothers. When they lose weight, it makes their children really proud of them and their husbands remarkably supportive.”
Williams has helped many diabetics who are struggling to inflict a positive influence on their blood sugar levels through healthy eating as well as offset the potential diabetes-related complications associated with weight issues. Some of the program’s participants have never eaten right before joining and are grateful for the knowledge they gain, said Williams.
School staff who lose weight also spread hope among students who struggle with wight issues and look to the adults in their life as role models, said Williams. “Most people feel hopeless when struggling with it.”
“I am excited about it coming,” said O’Rourke. “I think its going to be a good year.”
