Grand jury indicts twelve
NORWICH – The Chenango County grand jury met last Wednesday and handed up a number of criminal indictments. At the proceeding, the Chenango County District Attorney’s Office presents evidence against those they wish to prosecute. It is up to the jury to decide if there is enough reasonable cause to charge a person with a felony offense.
Those indicted by the grand jury are arraigned before the county or Supreme Court judge at a later date.
The grand jury indicted 12 individuals last week:
• Corey A. Burns, 24, and Zachariah M. Burns, 27, both of Greene, were indicted on charges of fourth degree grand larceny, a class E felony, and petit larceny, a class A misdemeanor.
It’s alleged that both Corey and Zachariah Burns, on or about Dec. 18 in the Town of Norwich, stole a pair of big screen television sets from the Wal-Mart Supercenter, 5396 State Highway 12.
Corey Burns was arraigned in county court Friday and pleaded not guilty to all charges.
• Andrew S. Button, 28, Mt. Upton, was indicted on charges of first degree sexual abuse, a class D violent felony, and endangering the welfare of a child, a class A misdemeanor.
It’s alleged that Button, who was arrested on or about Dec. 26, had unlawful sexual contact with a child under the age of seven years old.
• Jeb A. Davis, 33, Norwich, and Nathan A. Diamond, 33, New Berlin, were indicted on charges of third degree attempted burglary and third degree criminal mischief, both class E felonies.
It’s alleged that Davis and Diamond, on or about Dec. 16 in the Village of New Berlin, attempted to break a glass door at the Service Pharmacy with the intent to enter and commit the crime of larceny. After attempts to break the door were unsuccessful, the two allegedly fled the scene, and were later located in Otsego County.
Davis was arraigned in county court Friday and pleaded not guilty to all charges.
• Richard L. Hadley Jr., 41, Binghamton, was indicted on one count of first degree criminal contempt, a class E felony.
According to his indictment, Hadley repeatedly made harassing and annoying phone calls to another person.
• William W. Hatton, 26, Oxford, was indicted on two counts of third degree burglary, a class D felony, and two counts of petit larceny, a class A misdemeanor.
It’s alleged that Hatton, on or about Oct. 9, broke into two separate garages in an attempt to commit the crime of larceny, stealing copper fittings and electrical cords.
• Christopher P. Lorimer, 48, Norwich, was indicted on charges of driving while intoxicated, a class E felony, and resisting arrest, a class A misdemeanor.
It’s alleged that Lorimer, on or about Dec. 1 in the Town of Pharsalia, operated a motor vehicle while in an intoxicated condition, leading authorities on a high speed chase and subsequent foot pursuit prior to his arrest.
• Dustin J. Norris, 29, Smyrna, was indicted on charges of second degree forgery, a class D felony, and petit larceny, a class A misdemeanor.
Norris is accused of illegally forging a check at the Norwich NBT in September and receiving funds from another individual’s savings account.
• Jose A. Ortiz-Perez, 39, Allentown, Pa., was indicted on two counts of third degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a class B felony; second degree criminal possession of a weapon, a class C violent felony; and fourth degree criminal possession of stolen property, a class E felony.
It’s alleged that Ortiz-Perez, on or about Oct. 9 in the Town of Norwich, was found in possession of more than an ounce and a half of the narcotic cocaine, with the intent to sell, as well as a stolen .45 caliber handgun.
• William A. Schoonmaker, 28, Bainbridge, was indicted on charges of second degree burglary, a class C violent felony, and petit larceny, a class A misdemeanor.
Schoonmaker was arraigned in county court Friday and pleaded not guilty to all charges.
• David S. Thompson, 39, Sidney, was indicted on charges of third degree burglary, a class D felony; two counts of second degree assault, a class D violent felony; resisting arrest, a class A misdemeanor; and petit larceny, a class A misdemeanor.
Thompson was arraigned in county court Friday and pleaded not guilty to all charges.
