Bonney making a name for herself in shot put, power lifting.
NORWICH - Once a basketball player for Norwich, junior Brooke Bonney has made a seamless transition to track and field and power lifting.
Bonney, unbeaten in the indoor track and field season in the shot put, is ranked in the top three in division two in the state as she moves on to the state meet, and is unbeaten on the season. Most remarkable, said her throwing and lifting coach, Tom Stoddard, she has only been throwing the shot put less than a full year. “She is a great athlete, and her commitment and dedication are outstanding,” Stoddard said.
Over the past year, Bonney has also competed regularly in USA Power Lifting 100 percent raw competitions, and currently holds state records in her age group and weight class with a peak deadlift of 320 pounds and bench press of 170 pounds. While she hasn’t registered a record lift in the squat, Stoddard says Bonney has produced a completed 305 pounds, and regularly completes five repetitions of 135 pounds in the clean and jerk. “She is just a great person,” Stoddard said. “I am lucky and honored to be her coach.”
