‘What’s New’ from the upcoming CCHH Souper Bowl

NORWICH – Excitement is growing as the Chenango County Habitat for Humanity’s (CCHH) second annual soup tasting fundraiser, the CCHH Souper Bowl, nears. Habitat volunteers have so much planned for the Saturday, March 16 soup tasting event; it’s bound to be more “souperior” than ever! Aside from the new location at the Norwich Family YMCA, and the new hours, from 4 to 6 p.m., there are many other new happenings that everyone’s enthused about.
One of the biggest changes is the expanded Habitat Bake Sale, running from noon to 6 p.m. Due to the great new YMCA space, the Bake Sale, chaired by Bonnie Graves, will be managed like a separate event, but with no entry fee. Held just outside the community room, the array of baked delicacies will be available for sale four hours before the Souper Bowl even opens! Volunteers will be ‘whipping up’ delicious home baked cakes, breads, cookies and more with an emphasis on everyone’s favorite, “pies, pies, pies!”
It looks like there will be twenty-seven different ladle-ready “souperb” creations from area restaurant chefs to taste, up from last year’s twenty-two. More restaurants want to be involved as they know it’s a great way to get new customers in their doors. Some of the newcomers to join are the Café Connection, the Ontario Hotel, Park Place Restaurant, and the new Norwich Diner (Norwich); Armetta’s Café, Vincent’s, and Henry’s Drive-In (Afton), Cream of the Crop at the Old Red Barn (Bainbridge); and Mimi’s Italian Cuisine (Greene). Many will have homemade breads as the perfect partner to their savory offerings. With so many soups, choosing your favorite for the People’s Choice awards will be that much more challenging. Look for the March 12 cover of the Pennysaver, for the full list of participating restaurants and the types of soups they will have.
Having advance sale entry tickets, for $5, is new. People can save a dollar by buying tickets before March 16 from CCHH members or at the Norwich YMCA desk. Some people might buy tickets as gifts or may just buy a ticket to give to this good cause. Entrance will be $6 at the door.
Another way to get tickets is to listen to 95.3 BIG KAT, the “Country with attitude” radio station to win! Jim Sargent, the News Director at WBKT-FM (based in Norwich) is offering an on-air ticket give-away!
An amazing array of gift baskets and other great items are being gathered for the Chinese Auction by Terrie Wrede, this year’s Auction chairperson. Patrons will have a chance to win a bucket full of car care products from Advance Auto Parts, sweet wine from Nazzitto’s Wines & Liquors, Avon products, and a car Wet-Dry vac from Community Bank. There are themed baskets for chocolate lovers, movie fans, gardeners, bakers, children, and more. There will also be a couple of great door prizes of gift cards.
Like last year, there will be three wonderful local musical performers -Kevin La Due and Kaitlyn Jackson are back, and new to the event, Brian Golden, all graciously sharing their time and talents, at no additional cost.
This year, the Christ Lutheran Church of Norwich will be providing and serving coffee, tea and punch. Also, John Knapp, Knapp Knoll Woodworks of Oxford, has designed and crafted the People’s Choice awards.
Habitat for Humanity offers “a hand up, not a handout.” Plan to attend the CCHH Souper Bowl at the Family YMCA, located at 68-70 North Broad Street, Norwich, and help Habitat make dreams come true by helping to provide affordable housing to families in Chenango County. Proceeds will help to support CCHH’s next housing project.
