S-E stages high school musical this weekend

SHERBURNE – The Sherburne-Earlville music department will be plastering on masks and donning capes for a caper of entertaining proportions, Friday and Saturday, 7 p.m., at the middle/high school auditorium.
The troupe will be preforming “Into the Woods” by one-time Academy Award winner and eight-time Tony Award recipient, Stephen Sondheim. The story intertwines the tale of famous characters conceptualized by none other than the Brothers Grimm, in an orignal story about desire and the consequences of getting what you wish for.
The production is directed by elementary school music teacher Kylie Davis, who is assisted by high school social studies teacher Kenneth Buehner who are both enthusiastic as well as proud of the final product.
“It has gone really well and I have definitely enjoyed it,” said Buehner. “We have a great cast and talent to do this production, which really requires a broad spectrum.”
Described by Buehner as a funny show with a wide variety of music, “Into the Woods” has a message for the audience to take away if they so choose. Buehner first saw “Into the Woods” as a PBS special and consequently discovered an fondness for musicals.
“I was throwing some ideas around with Mr. Buehner about putting on a production and he adamantly insisted on this one, so he got what he deserved,” Davis said jokingly about Buehner’s subsequent and initially unplanned involvement in the musical.
“It has been awesome,” said veteran of 13 productions, senior Jacob Taylor, who will be performing the role of the baker. “Although it has probably been the most work I have put into a play, it has also been the most fun. It has definitely been worth the effort and I would do it again in a heartbeat.”
The musical’s directors couldn’t agree more with Taylor and are already eagerly anticipating their next foray into the world of drama. However, Buehner did add he and Davis would probably be tackling an easier play next year.
“I love this show, I love my character and I really get into it,” senior Maisy French vibrantly announced. French has graced the stage no less than six times prior to her performance as the ugly witch in “Into the Woods.” To demonstrate the lengths to which she will reach in an effort to put on a good show, French need only draw attention to the fake face glued to her own, permitting her total immersion into the role of the ugly witch.
“The kids are rewarding to work with,” said Davis. “The progress they have made is encouraging and wonderful to witness.”
Tickets prices are $5 for students and seniors, and $8 for adults.
