Norwich meets mirror image in state playoffs

It hasn’t happened often this year, but in its biggest game of the season, Norwich will face a team that may actually be smaller position by position.

Even so, the Tornado’s opponent Saturday in the Class B regional finals – Westhill – has found any number of ways to overcome its size disadvantage, just like Norwich. “We match up with them size-wise, and we’re happy they don’t have a 6-foot-8 or 6-foot-9 guy pounding us the post,” said Norwich head coach Tom Collier.

Collier said his team is on the doorstep of accomplishing its number one preseason goal: To advance past the first round of the intersectional playoffs. When Norwich tips off at 6:30 p.m. on Onondaga Community College’s 94-foot gym floor, it faces a seasoned postseason team that has won three of the last four Section III Class B titles, and won a state championship in 2010. This year’s Warriors club starts three sophomores and two seniors, and the sophomores lead the way in scoring.

“I’m very impressed with what I have seen of them,” Collier said. “Westhill’s teams have had the tendency to be a little undersized, but they do a really good job of figuring out how to do it.”
