“Pub Goes Red” a success in spreading awareness of heart disease and strokes
GREENE – Last month, the third annual “Pub Goes Red” fundraiser generated $4,404 in donations to be used in the fight against heart disease and stroke.
The event, hosted by Team Wayne and Irene, was held at Nathanael Greene’s Publick House. It far surpassed last year’s fundraiser, which raised $1,004. Team Wayne and Irene is comprised of family members and close friends of Irene Tornillo and Wayne Chapman, both of who passed away due to heart-related illnesses.
This year’s event featured entertainment from Tom Adams and Friends, had over 60 raffle baskets donated by local businesses, a 50/50 raffle, and plenty of door prizes. A total 176 individuals participated and the second floor of the pub had to be opened up to accommodate the large turnout.
“I think it was a successful event. We did well over what we did last year,” said organizer Patty Washburn, refering to both the high number of participants and donations. “In fact, we might have to find a bigger venue for next year.”
All of the proceeds are going to be donated to the 24th Annual American Heart Association Heart Walk, held April 28 at Binghamton University. The Heart Walk promotes physical activity and healthy living while also raising funds to help people struggling with heart disease and stroke, as well as attempting to prevent the advent of heart-related illnesses.
During the third annual “Pub Goes Red,” one of the attendees, Bruce Bates, a member of the Red Knights NY Chapter 40 motorcycle club, stood up at the podium and shared his personal experience with heart disease. Last year, Bates had been shocked to realize he was having a heart attack while dining with his friends. After addressing those gathered, Bates donated $750 to the cause.
“It really gave people a reason for being there besides just having a good time and was really powerful for people to hear,” said organizer Gina Chapman. “Overall, everyone just did a really good job and the night was amazing. For such a small community, they really came together hard.”
“Although it was a little crowded I think everyone had a great time,” said Washburn, adding her thanks to everyone who attended as well as the pub owners and the businesses that donated baskets for the raffles. “I can’t wait for next year,” she said.
