Burrell’s captures YMCA CBL title

NORWICH – A scoring surge to start the second half gave Burrell’s Excavating the necessary cushion it needed over Manpower/Norwich Pennysaver Monday night in the YMCA Corporate Basketball League title game.

Nick Brunick scored a team-high 26 points for Burrell’s, and Brian Collier added 21 giving their team its first league title since the 2005-2006 season, 68-61. The final outcome denied Manpower/Norwich Pennysaver its third league championship in four years, and M/NP has now lost back-to-back championship games.

Collier and Brunick accounted for all of the points in an 11-0 spurt to open the second half. Brunick broke a halftime tie innocently enough making two free throws after getting fouled on an offensive rebound. Collier then cut loose from well behind the three-point arc nailing back-to-back threes, and Brunick raised the lead to 44-33 with another three following a fortuitous bounce. Collier rifled a pass to teammate Tyler Ward just to the left of the basket. The ball deflected off Ward’s hands toward a waiting Brunick, who stepped into an uncontested trey.

Manpower/Pennysaver led most of the first half, and took a 20-14 lead after a pair of three-pointers from Will Joslyn. The runners-up took their last lead after a Joslyn baseline drive gave his club a 33-30 lead. Brunick knotted the game at 33-33 with one of his two threes on the night.
