County correctional facility receives accreditation
NORWICH – The Chenango County Correctional Facility was lauded as one of the best in the state Monday at the county Board of Supervisors meeting, when the department earned reaccreditation through the New York State Sheriffs’ Association Accreditation Program.
The accreditation program was created to enhance the provision of services by corrections division of sheriffs’ offices and to improve the public perception of sheriff’s offices in New York State. Less than half the correctional facilities in the state meet the 166 standards accreditation is based on, so to receive reaccreditation is worthy of applause, said New York State Sheriffs’ Association Executive Director Peter Kehoe, who presented the award to Sheriff Ernest Cutting at Monday’s meeting.
“You have an outstanding sheriffs’ office and an outstanding sheriff,” he told board members present, also that noting accreditation would not be possible without the moral and financial support of Chenango County residents and the work of the county Board of Supervisors. It takes incredible commitment and hard work to gain such an honor, he said. “It’s not something available just for asking.”
Kehoe went on to say accreditation has its benefits too. It boosts employee integrity and facility operations, and it bolsters confidence from the community while also lowering insurance rates as well as lawsuits and liability claims.
“This brings professionalism to all our operations and everything they do,” said Cutting, giving credit to the officers and staff at the facility. “We try to strive for excellence and to operate by the best policies. They are big achievements,” he added. “It’s and honor and it puts us in an elite status of sheriffs’ offices in New York State.”
The Chenango County Sheriffs’ Office first received accreditation in 2007 and must be reviewed every four years to retain accreditation. Cutting also took a moment to recognize Lt. Douglas Schult, jail administrator, and Sgt. Tonya Shoales, program manager, for their efforts at the correctional facility. “And it’s not just Doug and Tonya, it’s all the staff,” Cutting said. “We wouldn’t get that accreditation if they didn’t do all they do.”
