New Berlin moving forward with Main Street Grant project
NEW BERLIN – Commerce Chenango’s economic development branch, Development Chenango, announced in late December funding for the establishment of a $250,000 Main Street Grant Program for the Village of New Berlin. Awarded by the New York State Office of Community Renewal, the funding will also leverage an additional $84,000 for the renovation of downtown buildings, which will see improvements at six commercial spaces and residences, as well as the village’s streetscape.
Last week, a village meeting was held to select members as part of a review and oversight committee for the grant’s implementation from the local community, business owners and Development Chenango.
Village of New Berlin Mayor Terry Potter, who will serve on the committee joined by a member of the village’s board of trustees, said, “We already have a pretty well rounded committee, including people with architectural and engineering experience.”
The grant will be utilized by business owners in downtown New Berlin to improve their businesses, subsequently improving the curbside quality of the village. The improvements could vary from upgrading facades to renovations of interior spaces. Many New Berlin businesses already have projects in the works and will be eligible to receive a portion of the grant monies to help them complete their work, according to village officials.
“Development Chenango is looking forward to working with the Village of New Berlin,” added Commerce Chenango Economic Development Director Jennifer Tavares.
Although no timeline has yet been established for the use of the grant, hopes are to get at least a few of the projects in motion within the next two to four months, according to Potter.
“The revitalization of Downtown New Berlin is a process, but this is a step in the right direction, and at least we have gotten that process started,” he added. “I think this is not only going to attract other businesses into the area, it is also going to let people know New Berlin is being reinvigorated.”
The mayor added thanks for everyone who worked hard and put the many necessary hours into securing the grant. Spurred on by the successful acquisition of such a large grant, village leaders are already looking forward to a future in which more grants will be used to expand the area and to increase the viability of New Berlin properties.
Said Commerce Chenango President and CEO Steve Craig following the grant’s announcement, “New Berlin has become an important gateway to Chenango County ... this Main Street funding will help the village make the best possible impression of first-time visitors.”
