NHS Student Athletics Council to sponsor first sports fair April 19-20
NORWICH – With the aim of putting “a ball in a kid’s hands,” the Norwich Student Athletic Council is sponsoring a sports fair April 19-20 at the Norwich High School.
The fair will serve a dual purpose as a fundraiser for the SAC, while also generating interest in participating in sports. “The main goal of the Student Athletic Council is to promote athletics,” said council adviser Shelly Alger. “The numbers on sports teams have been declining, and we talked about what we could do to generate more interest. It was mentioned in conversation that every kid should have a ball in their hands. What if we got all of the sports teams together and sponsored games where they could win a prize, and that prize would be a ball?”
The opening event Friday night is an exhibition all-star basketball game pitting a select group of local residents and teachers called the “Dream Team” against the traveling basketball/comedy team, the Harlem All-Stars. Advance tickets for the game are $8 and $10 on game day. Tickets are available at the NHS School Athletics office as well as the main offices at Gibson and Perry Browne Elementary Schools.
