Crouse Community Center guests attend informational presentation on breast cancer

SHERBURNE – The Chenango Health Network’s Every Women Counts in Chenango County campaign made a special stop Wednesday at the Sherburne Adult Day Center to spread awareness of breast cancer among the registrants of the Crouse Community Center.
The presentation – offered by Chenango Health Network’s Lori Kemmerer – was meant to inform listeners of the dangers of cancer but also to impress upon them the preventability of those dangers through early detection.
“Our main goal is to make sure every women in Chenango County is getting screening for cancer because early detection does save lives,” said Kemmerer.
All of the Course adult day care centers in the area were invited to attend Wednesday’s presentation and 27 ladies, including staff and registrants, attended. A luncheon for the attendees was provided by Community Memorial Hospital in Hamilton.
“The Health Network receives grants through the state to give out informational gift packs and to teach people how to do self breast examinations,” explained Health Network’s Wendy Hinman.
The Health Network receives grant money from the state and uses it to perform outreach throughout all of Chenango County, spreading breast cancer awareness.
“Self-examination and early detection through mammograms can save lives,” added Hinman.

Long term, free RXs for prescriptions are also provided by the Health Network for people who can not afford them.
“If we can get anyone to sign up that will be great,” said Hinman of the event. “And of course we look forward to enjoying lunch with the ladies.”
After the presentation seven of those present signed up with the Health Network.
“It is absolutely a good thing, and part of what we do for the registrants is track their medical needs, anything that helps keep people from slipping through the cracks is great," added Sherburne facility supervising RN and Director Marlette Yarnes-Halbert.
