UV alum walking for a cause in Boston’s Avon Walk for Breast Cancer
NEW BERLIN – Current Saratoga Springs resident and 2005 Unadilla Valley Alum Brittany Miller will be participating in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer May 18-19 in Boston, Mass.
According to Miller, all the participants in the walk have been sent emails since the bombings in Boston on Monday and a cancellation has not been announced. Despite the horrible events that played out earlier this week, Miller said she is optimistic about the walk and is hoping it will continue as scheduled.
The Avon Walk for Breast Cancer is a 39.4 mile trek through the city of Boston, where participants will begin at the Boston Harbor and pass by landmarks such as the Boston Garden, the Boston Commons, and Fenway Park.
“This has always been a cause that is very close to me,” said Miller, who added eight women in her immediate family have been diagnosed with breast cancer.
At age 27, Miller said she regularly keeps up with her breast health and hopes this is something she won’t have to deal with in the future.
Upon registering to participate in the walk, Miller set a goal to raise $1,800. She stated she was nervous at the start, and feared that she may let people down. However, that self-doubt was short lived, as she has raised more than twice her desired amount, with pledge totals reaching $4,300.
Miller added that she chose the Avon Walk as it concentrates more on women who are suffering now, while some funds raised do go to support research and seeking a cure, a lot of the money goes toward helping to care for the families of those who are currently suffering.
“A meal for a family who has someone going through chemotherapy can really make your night,” said Miller, who added a portion of the money raised is used to provide home delivered meals to families in need. “My aunt lived with us when she was going through chemo, and the Baio family in New Berlin would bring food. It really helped. I believe everything comes back around, so feel this walk is a great thing. It is near and dear to my heart.”
