Airport Day ... ready for take off

NORWICH – Come June, hundreds of eyes will be on the sky for an exhilarating spectacle of aerobatics at the Lt. Warren E. Eaton Airport in Norwich. It’s simply an exciting event that area flight fanatics can look forward to as county officials and local businesses host the 23rd annual Airport Day from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 8.

Airport Day has long been a staple to promote Chenango County’s own aviation center, featuring displays of planes and plane engines, hangers, communication equipment, plane rides; and only recently, the return of an authentic aerobatic show for the enjoyment of those watching from the ground - a highlighted feature that had been absent from Airport for nearly ten years until 2011.

“This is a free community event to foster Lt. Warren Eaton Airport and aviation to our surrounding communities,” explained Airport Day coordinator Franklin Turner, adding that the extravaganza is paid for and sponsored 100 percent by local businesses.

Airport Day takes off with the North Norwich and Mt. Upton Fire Department pancake breakfast at 7 a.m., followed by Young Eagles flight sign-ups at 8 a.m. for young wannabe pilots.

“The EAA Chapter 1204 will host free plane rides for children ages 8 through 17, from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m.,” said Turner. A parent signature is required for youth to head skyward. Plane rides will also be available for participants 17 and older beginning at 8:30 a.m., for $30 per passenger.
