Norwich tennis team falls to Ithaca in STAC final
ITHACA – Unbeaten Ithaca won all of the key points, said Norwich coach John Stewart, as the Little Red captured the Southern Tier Athletic Conference tennis title beating the Purple Tornado Tuesday at Reese Tennis Center, 6-1.
For the first time this season, Norwich did not win a point in doubles play, and the lone team point came from sophomore Matt Craig. Craig was 17-0 this season in STAC matchups, and he defeated Aidan MacKenzie, 7-6, 7-5.
"The score really does not indicate how close we were in many in the matches," Stewart said. "Zan (Stewart), Colin (Stewart), and our second doubles team (Alec Weaver-Brendon Budd) all lost four deuce points in the first set. Ithaca is a Class A school that has proven itself all season, but I was proud of the way we played. Things just didn't roll our way."
Norwich finishes 14-3 overall, and it took a step forward from last season when it lost in the first round of the STAC playoffs. "Last year we lost in the semifinals, and this year it was the finals," Stewart said. "It's all about progress, and it's a really long season."
