Time to give up ignorance and celebrate Hemp History Week
Dear Editor,
It’s time. Hemp History Week is June 3-9. It’s time to celebrate the noble hemp plant and all its possibilities.
It’s time to give accolades for its agricultural benefits. To grow hemp requires no pesticides and this crop with the deep tap root is annually renewable.
Versatility is hemp’s greatest strength. With hemp we can make soap, shampoo, bath gel and cosmetics, we can manufacture hemp components for headliners and door panels in cars, and have industry that supports hempen clothes that are warmer in winter and cooler in summer.
Nutritionally, hemp is a powerhouse high protein seed containing all 9 of the essential amino acids. It contains a balanced ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6 fats at a perfect 3 to 1 ratio. The knowledge that the hemp seed is the most nutritionally complete food source in the world is not lost on local eateries. During Hemp History Week, please stop in to see what hemp foods local chefs have cooked up at: Mary’s on the Corner at the corner of state Highway 23 and county Road 32 in Norwich, the Norwich Diner on East Main Street in Norwich, The Cafe Connection on South Broad Street in Norwich, The Caboose at the tracks on East Main Street in Norwich, The Ontario Hotel on the corner of Midland Drive and Griffin Street in Norwich, and Remember When on North Main Street in New Berlin.
Hemp supports family farmers and small business. Jobs created are at the local level, jobs that will not be moving overseas. The manufacture of hemp products is less polluting. A return to hemp would solve our paper problem. There are so many reasons why a hemp industry should be thriving, adding to the $800 million annual worldwide industrial hemp sales. Past presidents Washington and Jefferson grew hemp. It’s time to re-institute a hemp industry in these United States. It’s time to give up our ignorance and get on the profitable hemp bandwagon just like the rest of the industrialized world.
Sincerely,
Earl Callahan
