Norwich juniors have sights set on track and field state titles

Norwich juniors Brooke Bonney and Matt Murray have their sights set on the top of the podium at this weekend's New York State track and field championships.
Murray was one step from the top a season ago when he placed second in Division II in the 400 meters, while Bonney, in just her first year of track and field, was sixth in the state in the shot put.
A season later, the two dynamic Purple Tornado athletes have an opportunity to win Norwich's first track and field state title in 13 years. Bonney, based on her school-record throw in the discus at last week's New York State qualifier, is among the top four seeds in that event, while Murray, who was third in Section IV in the 800 meters figures to improve on that performance this week. Running in the fast heat of the 800, all 12 runners in Murray's race are separated by a mere two seconds.
Given that Murray has no other obligations during the meet – unlike the regular season and sectionals where he typically ran two or three times a night – he will enter the 800 on fresh legs and at full strength.
"We're hoping this gives Matt the opportunity to run a personal-best," said NHS track and field coach, Shaun Horan. "He has some great competition there, and the kids Matt is running against have run some phenomenal times. Position-wise, he'll probably be running next to someone the entire race."
Bonney has become something of a throwing prodigy shattering Norwich's long-standing discus school record in just her second season of track and field. Her winning throw last week of 122 feet would have won a division two state title a season ago, and if she approaches that distance again, she may become Norwich's first female "thrower" to win a New York State championship.
"She really excited to see that the hard work she has put in has paid off," Horan said. "She hits the weights pretty hard, but she has figured out how to use that strength. She's very coordinated and fast. Plus, she's become more aggressive in the circle, and she puts everything into every throw."
Bonney is first up with the Division II discus competition beginning at 2 p.m. Murray competes in the 800 meters at 3 p.m., and the D-II shot put is slated for Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
