Chase Memorial employee recognized for fundraising efforts
NEW BERLIN – Keith Wilcox survived a stroke in June of 2010 yet hasn’t let that slow him down. He is an employee at Chase Memorial Nursing Home and has participated in many walks raising money for the American Heart and Stroke Associations.
Wednesday morning, Wilcox made his way to the sunroom of Chase with a resident, to join her in a program being planned by Activities Director Judy McCall - or so he thought. To his surprise, he spotted his wife, mother-in-law and father-in-law, and knew something different was on tap.
Refreshments were available for Wilcox, his family, and the residents in attendance. Moments later a representative from the American Heart Association arrived bearing an award. Wilcox was presented with the “Lew Roberts Memorial Award” for his continued achievements and participation in walks as a stroke survivor. Wilcox was informed he is only the 37th person to receive this award.
“He wasn’t able to make it to the large award ceremony when other recipients got their awards, so we wanted to have something special here for him,” said Judy McCall. “He is an asset to the nursing home and the American Heart Association. We are so proud of him and thank him.”
Wilcox’s wife, Maria, also stated how proud she is of her husband.
Team Keith was established in March 2011 and has raised more than $1,100 each year its members have participated in the Greatest Heart Run and Walk in Utica, according to Captain Lexi Robinson. Wilcox and members of Team Keith have also participated in the Otsego County Run and Walk, raising more than $1,100.
Said Wilcox after accepting the award, “I will keep doing what I am doing until I can’t.”
He also spoke about the Masonic Care Community where he received his therapy after his stroke, and said he likes to go visit his “old therapist and the guys” who got him walking again.
“I could not be more proud of not only the team’s accomplishments, but also Keith’s accomplishments individually. I am so excited that Keith has earned this award,” said Robinson.
After receiving the award, Wilcox thought out loud about where he would hang it, deciding his trophy case would be a nice spot.
