Stroll for 60
SHERBURNE – Fourth grade students of the Sherburne-Earlville Elementary School have been working hard to organize a benefit for diabetes taking place Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. with a 9:15 a.m. registration taking place at the S-E stadium.
The event, entitled Stroll for 60, was first held two years ago and raises funds for JDRF, a foundation striving to cure type one diabetes. Elementary school students have invited members of the community to come out Saturday to walk for 60 minutes, as the event is not gauged by distance. If there is rain Saturday, the event will be moved into the high school/middle school gym.
In preparation for the Stroll for 60, fourth graders have been writing and sending letters to businesses imploring them to sponsor the walk.
“My daughter, Morgan, makes this cause personal for me, and having Maggie in our class makes it personal for all of the students, but more important is the life lesson these students are learning,” said Heidi Johnson who along with Jessica Blenis coordinates the fundraiser.
“I am quite happy, because if we can get enough money to get a cure we can get rid of diabetes,” added Maggie Menard, a fourth grade student who struggles with type one diabetes.
Although the event in its first year was able to raise $2,323, organizers decided to take last year off. However, when Johnson discovered that one of her current students was struggling with type one diabetes she decided to bring it back again this year.
“We have the ambitious goal of doubling what we earned the first year, but we will be happy if were are just able to meet or surpass that number,” confessed Johnson. “The fourth grade class is extremely enthusiastic, they wrote business letters to some 50 businesses asking for support.”
The event will also feature a number of other diversions including raffles, a DJ, as well as refreshments including yogurt donated by Chobani.
“I want to try and help and make a life change,” said Zoe, another of the participating fourth grade students.
“One person can make a difference in the lives of others, and they are experiencing that firsthand,” said Johnson
