After school at the YMCA

NORWICH – The Norwich Family YMCA Afterschool Program is exposing kids to a world of rudimentary science and ingenuity, and proving that it’s never too early to start learning the basic laws of physics.
Kids in the program took part in the first-ever afterschool egg-drop last week. Young visionaries spent hours constructing and modifying cushioned containers of plastic, newspaper, paper, strings and bubble wrap - anything to keep their egg from breaking when dropped from the facility’s second story landing.
The goal was to show a more creative and fun side of science, math, and early engineering, said YMCA intern Ron Alston.
“The point is to teach kids some basic science skills about gravity, like weather or not heavy objects fall faster than light objects, or if anything can slow them down.”
“You can see that they are involved. They’re learning and they’re having fun doing it,” added Bonnie Tiffany, youth and family director for the Norwich Family YMCA, and talks are already underway for the kids’ next big project.
