Oxford Memorial Library to host special National Dairy Month event

OXFORD – The Oxford Memorial Library will hold a special family event at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Community Room of the library in light of June’s National Dairy Month designation.
Partnered with Cornell Cooperative Extension’s EAT Smart New York Program, the event will promote the health benefits of dairy.
According to Oxford Library’s Youth Services Coordinator Carolyn Thau, the program will focus on family participation and is free and open to the public.
“Food is expensive,” stated Thau. “This program promotes healthy eating on a budget.”
In addition, the event will help to identify the health benefits of dairy in a fun, interactive manner. Thau added family participation will be encouraged, as it is going to be a fun, interactive evening.
EAT Smart New York is the Food Stamp Nutrition Education Program through Cornell Cooperative Extension offering classes to teach participants about food budgeting, meal planning, nutrition and food preparation.
Emphasis with EAT Smart New York programs is placed on showing families the necessary tools to budget limited food dollars, prepare nutritious meals, and eat and clean-up together as a family. Thursday’s event at the library will also highlight the benefits of dairy in a diet, and what dairy can offer.
According to the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA), National Dairy Month began in 1939 and was originally National Milk Month. The name changed to National Diary Month after the National Dairy Council helped to promote the cause. According to the IDFA, a great way to start out the summer is by taking part in the “3-A-Day” initiative - where people are encouraged to consume three nutrient-rich dairy foods each day. The IDFA also asserts dairy products can help reduce the risk of high blood pressure, osteoporosis and certain cancers. In addition, the IDFA states there are proteins in certain dairy products that may help build and repair muscle tissue, and vitamin A in dairy products can help maintain healthy skin.
The Oxford Library event in conjunction with EAT Smart New York will strive to both celebrate June as National Dairy Month and also educate and inform parents and children on the benefits of dairy and eating healthy with limited funds.
Added Thau, “The program is a free, fun and inexpensive way to spend time together.”
Smoothie samples will be provided after the program, she added.
