Chenango County history buffs preparing for Civil War battlefield tour

OXFORD – On the 150th anniversary of the infamous Battle of Gettysburg, a group of Oxford history enthusiasts will venture forth for a four-day tour of Civil War battlefields and sites.
Major highlights of the tour will focus on the 114th Regiment, NY Infantry; and the 10th Regiment, NY Calvary (two regiments which featured Chenango County citizens). The tour will leave August 5 and return August 8 – exactly 150 years after Robert E. Lee tendered his resignation to Confederate President Jefferson Davis following the North’s victory at Gettysburg.
“We have a pretty extensive itinerary planned,” said tour organizer Darla Race of White Star Tours.
Race has organized similar sorts of enterprises for five years now. She was approached by members of the Oxford Civil War group, which meets every month, and asked to organize the tour.
“I coordinated the itinerary based on their interests along with the help of my son, who is a history teacher in Greene and is very passionate about the Civil War,” she added.
The four-day, three-night tour will spotlight the battlefields of Gettysburg, Antietam, Harper’s Ferry, Cedar Creek, Manassas, as well as Belle Mansion, the National Cemetery in Winchester, and other points of interest, such as a visit to the monument for the 114th regiment, which was headquartered in Norwich and recruited out of Chenango, Cortland and Madison counties. The majority of the recruits hailed from Oxford, Norwich, Eaton, Lebanon, Greene, Sherburne, New Berlin and Hamilton, and were mustered outside the Chenango County Courthouse on Sept. 3, 1862, before being shipped off for service via the Chenango Canal.
“We are really excited for this,” said Fred Lanfear, Oxford Historical Society President, who added a number of the people already signed up for the tour know quite a bit about the Civil War (Lanfear predicts they may even be able to tell the tour guides a thing or two).
“They are very passionate and will be able to shed some light for the rest of us,” said Race, who added that she is really looking forward to the trip.
While some two dozen people have already signed up for the tour, approximately 15 spots are still available. Bus pick-ups will take place in Norwich, Oxford and Greene, and the cost is $599 per person.
