Bluestone Golf Course to host Samson/Nelson memorial tournament this Saturday

OXFORD - The lives of Oxford Academy graduates Mark Samson and Susan Nelson were cut way too short. Their legacies, however, will live on for generations to come thanks to the inaugural Susan Nelson and Mark Samson Memorial Golf Tournament, slated for Saturday, July 6 at Bluestone Golf Course.
The tournament will act as a fundraiser for the Dollars for Scholars scholarship funds established in Samson's and Nelson's names, said Melissa Chrystie, daughter of Nelson.
"My mom passed away in March, and some of her high school friends set up a scholarship fund," Chrystie said. "She just loved sports and so did Mark, so we thought a golf tournament was an excellent way to raise money."
Nelson was an outstanding three-sport athlete at Oxford Academy playing on the school's first girls' basketball sectional championship team. A member of the class of '78, she was also her class's salutatorian.
Samson graduated just a year after Nelson. A fine athlete in his own right, he was cut down by cancer in the mid 1990s at the age of 34.
"The first thing I remember about Mark is that he never missed a day of school from kindergarten through twelfth grade," said David Branham, longtime golf professional who graduated with Samson. "Mark was such a straight-laced kid and a great friend of mine. Mark's passing was such a shock, and Sue, she was such a very sweet person. Mark's family and Sue's family, they are so well respected in this community."
Chrystie said an academic scholarship in Samson's and Nelson's names will be awarded to outgoing seniors, and specific criteria have already been established for those scholarships.
"Mom was a three-sport athlete and salutatorian, so we're looking for an outstanding female athlete who also does well academically," Chrystie said. "Mark had a fun, bubbly personality, so we're looking for a male who is continuing his education, and also has a positive outlook on life, is fun, and energetic."
This Saturday's tournament is a captain and crew format with a 10 a.m. shotgun start. The cost to enter is $55 for Bluestone non-members, and $35 for members. Included in that fee is the cart rental, t-shirt, coffee, doughnuts, and lunch. Additionally, the tournament will administer a putting contest, long driving contest, closest to the pin, and a 50-50 raffle. As a special bonus, DJ Jeff Kelsey has donated his services, and will play music throughout the post-round activities.
So far, Chrystie said, over 20 four-person teams have registered for the tournament, with entries accepted up to the day of the tournament. Hole sponsorship is also available at $50 per hole.
For more information or to sign up for the tournament, contact Chrystie at 316-0857 or Bluestone Golf Course at 843-8352.
