Chenango River Theatre presents Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash
GREENE – Ring of Fire:The Music of Johnny Cash, opens August 8 at the Chenango River Theatre and will run through September 1 at 991 state Highway 12, Greene. The show is a living portrait of Johnny Cash, the Man in Black, and features the iconic songbook of Cash in a unique musical about love and faith, rowdiness and redemption, struggle and success, and home and family.
The Chenango River Theatre is one of the first theatres in the country to present the new version of this show, co-produced by the Raymond Corporation. The new version was created this spring at the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, a company well known for making “jukebox musicals” that have gone on to receive critical success.
The performance is slated to run Thursdays through Saturdays precisely at 7:30 p.m. The format of the venue does not allow for late seating, as the late parties would have to walk directly across the stage, said Bill Lelbach, Artistic & Managing Director at the theatre. Sunday’s matinee performances begins at 2 p.m.
More than two dozen of Cash’s classic hits paint a musical portrait of The Man in Black - tunes including “Ring of Fire,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Man in Black,” “Daddy Sang Bass,” “Five Feet High and Rising,” and “I’ve Been Everywhere.”
The show claims to “lift your heart and stir your soul” in a celebratory tribute to one of the 20th century’s most influential singer-songwriters.
Cash was also known for his funnier, light-hearted songs: “Dirty Old Egg Suckin’ Dog,” “Flushed from the Bathroom of your Heart,” and the ever-well-known “Boy Named Sue.”
The performance at the Chenango River Theatre will highlight these pieces as well as the poignant songs about hardship and heartache.
The show’s idea was conceived by William Meade, and was then created by Richard Maltby. Direction is by Chris Blisset.
The 2013 season at the Chenango River Theatre is sponsored by Empire Toyota of Oneonta.
Those wishing to attend are encouraged to reserve their seats as soon as possible, as a number of show dates have already sold out. The most recent list of unavailable dates include August 11, 15 and 18.
The August 10 performance is half price for anyone wishing to attend under the age of 35. Friday, August 16, a post-show talk-back will take place with the performers.
Chenango River Theatre’s intimate, air-conditioned 99-seat theatre is just three miles south of Greene on state Highway 12. The Chenango River Theatre is the greater Binghamton area’s only professional nonprofit theatre company under annual contract with Actors’ Equity Association, the national association for professional actors and state managers in the United States – the same actors seen on television, in film, and at major theatres across the country.
The 2013 Chenango River Theatre season is made possible in part by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
Individual tickets for the show are $23 Thursday, $26 Friday, $27 Saturday and $24 Sunday. The best way to reserve seats is via email at tickets@chenangorivertheatre.org.
